A view of the future, from a Zionist perspective
Contributing my light in the hope of aiding in the navigation of our People
Welcome to A Lighthouse by me, Ariel Beery.
As an individual, I am dedicated to solving problems facing humanity. For the past decade I have focused on improving access to life-saving healthcare technologies in emerging markets. I have had the privilege to see the world as experienced by people in their greatest need, and there is much, much that needs to be done to serve those people better.
I am also a Zionist, from the school of Creative Zionism that formed PresenTense back in 2005, a spiritual child of Ahad Haam and Mordechai Kaplan, of Hashomer Hatzair and Martin Buber. Of Ralph Goldman and Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. And during the 2021 clash between Hamas and the State of Israel I grew frustrated with the debate, and decided to contribute my perspective to the questions facing Israel and the Jewish People in the present which will determine our the future.
To separate my personal and professional lives, this substack will focus on the events of the day from a Creative Zionist perspective. It is the heir of my column, A Lighthouse, for the Columbia Spectator back in the early 2000s, of my columns for the Forward, of my work with Aharon Horwitz on Blogs of Zion, of my platform at PresenTense Magazine. While A Lighthouse focuses on Israel and Geopolitics, my Medium will continue to share thoughts about social innovation, entrepreneurship, and public health.
From a content perspective, I will target one post a week here at A Lighthouse, reflecting on the challenges and opportunities of the moment. I may cross-post here from my blog at the Times of Israel, and include in those posts more tactical suggestions to turn the ideas in those columns into practical efforts and workplans. Over time I hope to bring more voices here, voices who are equally committed to their heritage and the role we as the People of Israel should play to better the world. Above all else, I hope my efforts here will spark conversation, and I look forward to participating in that discourse if I am lucky enough to inspire to you respond.
Thank you for joining me on this journey, and sign up now so you don’t miss the first issue.
